The best designer I ever hired was a 21 year old from Atlanta who cost $50/hour. Quickly he increased to $75/hour and then even went up to $150/hour and I still wanted to hire him. He was the best designer I ever used.
What he taught me was the power of great design. The return on investment always made it worth while.
It may seem ludicrous to spend $150 on a banner ad when you can get anyone to make one for a fiver. But when the $150 ad gets you 3x the amount of clicks it becomes obvious that it's more expensive to hire a bad designer.
One big problem for people like us (entrepreneurs, bloggers, marketers etc), is that it's hard to find great talent. Designers that will do our vision justice.
That's why we created
AwesomeWeb. So that we never have to struggle to find the best designers and developers. All we have to do is turn up.
IncomeDiary was quite an easy site to redesign because we never change it too much visually. ExpertPhotography was a bit more of a mess to sort out.
We hired a separate designer and programmer. In my experience, it's unlikely that you will get the best results if you hire one person to do both jobs.
Not only will you get better work this way but it's usually a lot cheaper. Once the designer is done, they hand you the Photoshop file, you then hand that file to the programmer.
